NordVPN Review for Remote Workers and Small Businesses

If you work from home, a coworking space, a hotel or a café, a VPN is one of the simplest privacy tools you can add. It encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server and hides your real IP address from the sites you visit. NordVPN is one of the best-known consumer VPNs, and independent reviewers rate it highly. It has also expanded well beyond a basic VPN into scam protection, password management and identity monitoring.

A VPN isn’t a cure-all, though. The FTC notes that most websites now encrypt traffic, so public Wi-Fi is usually safe for everyday browsing, and it recommends strong passwords, two-factor authentication and up-to-date software no matter how you connect. Here’s what NordVPN actually includes, what it costs after the first term, what reviewers praise and criticize, and when a small business should look at a business VPN instead.

Quick verdict

  • Good choice for: remote workers and freelancers who want an easy, fast VPN for public and shared Wi-Fi, travel and general privacy, on up to 10 devices.
  • Think twice if: you’re on a tight budget, dislike auto-renewal at a higher price, or need central admin control for a team.
  • Our pick for most remote workers: the Basic plan if you only want the VPN and scam protection, or Complete if you’d also use the password manager and malware tools.

NordVPN pros and cons

  • Pro: strong independent ratings. PCMag rates NordVPN 4.5 out of 5 (Editors’ Choice) and says it came first in its latest speed tests.
  • Pro: repeated no-logs audits. Deloitte Lithuania completed NordVPN’s sixth independent no-logs assurance engagement at the end of 2025.
  • Pro: 10 devices per account, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus browser extensions.
  • Pro: useful work features, including a Kill Switch, split tunneling on some platforms, an optional dedicated IP and post-quantum encryption with its NordLynx protocol.
  • Con: renewal prices are much higher than intro prices, and plans renew automatically.
  • Con: not a team tool. NordVPN is designed for individual accounts. Businesses that need central management are pointed to NordLayer.
  • Con: busy apps. PCMag found the Windows interface cluttered and confusing for new users.
  • Con: mixed antivirus results. PCMag’s latest tests of its Threat Protection Pro malware and phishing tools scored lower than earlier rounds.

NordVPN plans and pricing (at the time of writing)

NordVPN’s pricing page lists three plans: Basic, Complete and Prime. All include the VPN, 10 simultaneous devices and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Intro prices below are from NordVPN’s US pricing page at the time of writing, are paid upfront and exclude sales tax.

Plan1-year plan (first 12 months)2-year plan (first 27 months)Renews at (per year)What it adds
Basic$65.88 ($5.49/mo)$94.23 ($3.49/mo)$139.08VPN, scam and phishing protection, Dark Web Monitor (up to 5 emails)
Complete$77.88 ($6.49/mo)$121.23 ($4.49/mo)$219.48*Basic plus desktop anti-malware, ad and tracker blocker, password manager, 1 TB encrypted cloud storage, call protection and Dark Web Monitor Pro
Prime$113.88 ($9.49/mo)$202.23 ($7.49/mo)$296.28*Complete plus credit monitoring, identity theft insurance up to $1M and cyber extortion insurance up to $100K (US only, excluding New York)

*NordVPN’s pricing page states Basic’s $139.08/year renewal directly. The Complete and Prime figures are the regular annual prices NordVPN lists for comparison, and PCMag reports the same renewal amounts. The 2-year intro term includes 3 extra months. Dedicated IP and Incogni data removal are paid add-ons at checkout. Prices change frequently and vary by region, so always check NordVPN’s current pricing.

What the renewal really costs

NordVPN’s own terms say subscriptions renew automatically at the then-applicable renewal price, which may be higher than the intro price. Annual plans can be charged up to 14 days before renewal, and NordVPN says it emails a reminder before charging plans longer than one month. On Basic, that means going from $65.88 for the first year to $139.08 at renewal. PCMag also reports that NordVPN has faced a class action over its renewal practices, with the case awaiting arbitration as of its latest update, and it recommends not committing to a long plan before you know the service suits you. Put the renewal date in your calendar either way.

NordVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on direct purchases. Refunds must be requested within 30 days of the initial purchase, and purchases made through the App Store, Google Play or Amazon are refunded by those stores.

Key features for remote work

Encryption, protocols and speed

NordVPN’s own protocol, NordLynx, is built on WireGuard, and OpenVPN and NordWhisper are also available. NordVPN offers post-quantum encryption, which is meant to protect against future attacks from quantum computers. Its support center notes this currently works only with NordLynx and is disabled with dedicated IPs, other protocols, obfuscated servers or Meshnet. PCMag measured a 1.94% drop in download speed and a 5.54% drop in upload speed in its latest tests, the best results it recorded, which matters if you’re on video calls all day.

Kill Switch

The Kill Switch blocks internet traffic if your VPN connection drops, so data doesn’t slip out unencrypted. NordVPN says it’s available on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Linux, and that it is off by default on most apps, so turn it on in settings. On Windows you can choose app-level or system-level protection. NordVPN also notes the trade-offs: some apps such as calls may fail when the connection drops, and you may need to pause it briefly to sign in to hotel or café Wi-Fi.

Split tunneling

Split tunneling lets chosen apps bypass the VPN. That’s handy if a work tool, a video call app or a local printer behaves better without it. According to NordVPN’s support center, it’s available on Windows, Android and Android TV, while Linux uses an allowlist of ports and subnets instead. PCMag notes it’s absent on macOS and iOS.

If you take a lot of calls from shared spaces, a headset with a noise-canceling mic keeps café chatter off the call; our guide to the best headsets for Zoom and Teams calls compares the top options.

Threat protection and scam tools

Every plan includes scam and phishing protection, which filters traffic through NordVPN’s DNS servers to block malicious domains while you’re connected. Complete and Prime add desktop anti-malware that scans downloads, an ad and tracker blocker, email link scanning for Gmail and Yahoo, and call protection. PCMag’s latest tests were mixed: Threat Protection Pro caught 84% of its malware samples and 82% of its phishing pages, below earlier results. Treat it as an extra layer, not a replacement for your regular security software.

Dedicated IP and dedicated servers

By default you share IP addresses with other NordVPN users. A dedicated IP, sold as an add-on, gives you an address only you use. NordVPN says this helps you avoid CAPTCHAs and access IP-restricted networks, which can help if a client or service only allows sign-ins from approved addresses. NordVPN also lists dedicated servers with a static IP and port forwarding for more advanced remote access.

Meshnet

Meshnet lets you link your own devices into a private encrypted network, for example to reach files on a home computer while traveling. NordVPN announced in August 2025 that it would retire Meshnet, then reversed that decision in September 2025 after user feedback, saying Meshnet would stay live and supported and would be open-sourced. It’s still listed on NordVPN’s features page, but if you’d rely on it for work, check its current status first.

Servers and devices

NordVPN lists servers in 225+ locations and allows 10 devices on one account. PCMag notes that many locations in Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific use virtual servers, which can be slower, while all US and UK servers are physical. NordVPN says its servers run from RAM, so data doesn’t persist after a restart.

Support

NordVPN offers 24/7 support by live chat and email, plus a large help center. PCMag found the help center detailed but said it takes a few clicks to reach the chat or ticket options.

Privacy and trust

For a VPN, trust matters as much as features. NordVPN has had its no-logs policy independently assessed six times: in 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The latest engagement was carried out by Deloitte Lithuania between November 10 and December 12, 2025, under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard, and covered standard, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and obfuscated servers. It is a point-in-time assessment, and the full report is available to NordVPN users through their Nord Account.

There’s history to weigh too. In October 2019, NordVPN disclosed that an attacker had accessed one rented server at a data center in Finland in March 2018, through an insecure remote-management account left by the data center provider. NordVPN said no user activity logs, usernames or passwords were exposed, and it ended the relationship with that provider. PCMag also reports that in October 2024 NordVPN complied with a warrant by handing over a user’s payment details and account email, with no connection or activity data, and it now publishes a transparency report. NordVPN operates under Panamanian law.

NordVPN vs. NordLayer for small businesses

NordVPN is sold as a personal subscription: one account covering up to 10 devices. That suits a solo owner or freelancer well. If you have a team, NordVPN’s own pricing page points businesses to NordLayer, Nord Security’s network security platform for business, for access management, security controls and scaling the network. NordLayer requires a minimum of 5 licenses. If you need to give staff secure access to company resources and manage who can reach what, compare NordLayer and other business VPNs rather than buying individual NordVPN accounts.

If your employer already provides a VPN or a managed laptop, check its IT policy before installing a personal VPN on that device. Running two VPNs can conflict, and some companies don’t allow it.

What independent reviewers say

  • PCMag rates NordVPN 4.5 out of 5 (“Outstanding”) with an Editors’ Choice award, praising multi-hop, split tunneling and Tor support, excellent speeds, global server coverage and its range of add-ons. It criticizes the price, unclear annual pricing and a weaker antivirus component.
  • TechRadar reported that the 2025 Deloitte assessment found no retention of traffic-related data such as IP addresses or timestamps across the server types examined, and Tom’s Guide also covered the audit.

Who NordVPN is (and isn’t) right for

A good fit

  • Remote workers and freelancers who often work on public or shared Wi-Fi
  • Frequent travelers who want a fast VPN on a laptop, phone and tablet
  • Solo owners who want a VPN, password manager and scam protection from one company
  • Anyone who values independent no-logs assessments

Consider alternatives if

  • You need central admin controls for a team. Look at business VPNs such as NordLayer.
  • You want the lowest price. PCMag puts NordVPN among the most expensive VPNs it has reviewed and also names Proton VPN, a more affordable option, as an Editors’ Choice.
  • You mainly use a Mac or iPhone and need split tunneling, which PCMag notes is absent on those platforms.
  • Your employer already provides a VPN for work devices.

Tips if you choose NordVPN

  1. Start with a shorter plan if you’re unsure, and use the 30-day money-back window to check it works with your work apps.
  2. Turn on the Kill Switch and auto-connect for untrusted Wi-Fi.
  3. Set a renewal reminder a few weeks before your term ends and decide whether to renew, switch plans or cancel auto-renewal.
  4. Use split tunneling (where available) for apps that misbehave on the VPN, such as a local printer or a work tool.
  5. Keep the basics in place. Use a password manager and two-factor authentication and keep your software updated, as the FTC recommends.

How we evaluated NordVPN

This is a research-based review. We did not run speed, leak or malware tests for this article. We compared NordVPN’s current plans, prices, renewal and refund terms from its pricing page, checked feature details in its features pages and support center, and reviewed its no-logs assessment announcements and 2019 breach disclosure. We weighed PCMag’s in-depth review, TechRadar’s and Tom’s Guide’s coverage of the 2025 audit, and the FTC’s consumer guidance on public Wi-Fi, focusing on what matters to remote workers and small businesses.

FAQ

Is NordVPN good for remote work?

For individual remote workers, yes. It’s fast in independent tests, covers 10 devices and includes a Kill Switch and scam protection. Teams that need central management should look at a business VPN such as NordLayer.

Do I need a VPN on public Wi-Fi?

Not always. The FTC says most websites now use encryption, so public Wi-Fi is usually safe for everyday browsing. A VPN adds privacy by hiding your traffic from the network operator and your IP address from sites, which many remote workers find worthwhile on shared networks.

How much does NordVPN cost after the first year?

At the time of writing, NordVPN’s pricing page lists Basic renewing at $139.08 per year, with regular annual prices of $219.48 for Complete and $296.28 for Prime. Renewal prices can change, so check before your term ends.

Does NordVPN keep logs?

NordVPN says it doesn’t log your online activity, and independent assessments by Deloitte, most recently at the end of 2025, concluded its systems were in line with its no-logs statement at the time of the assessment.

Can I use one NordVPN account for my whole team?

One account covers up to 10 devices, but it’s designed for personal use. For a team, NordVPN directs businesses to NordLayer, which requires at least 5 licenses.

The bottom line

NordVPN is a strong, fast and well-audited VPN for remote workers and solo business owners who want privacy on shared networks and a few useful extras. Go in with clear eyes about the renewal price, turn on the Kill Switch, and treat its threat protection as an extra layer rather than your only defense. For most people, Basic covers the essentials and Complete is worth it if you’ll use the password manager and malware tools. Teams that need central control should look at NordLayer instead.
