Shopify vs. Systeme.io: Which Is Better for Solo Business Owners?

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Picks are research-based, not hands-on tested. Full disclosure

If you run a business on your own and want to start selling online, two names come up again and again: Shopify and Systeme.io. Both let you take payments on your own site without hiring a developer, but they are built for different jobs. Shopify is a dedicated ecommerce platform designed around an online store. Systeme.io is an all-in-one marketing platform built around sales funnels, email, courses and memberships, with a checkout attached.

This comparison uses each company’s official pricing pages and help documentation, plus independent reviews, to show what each platform includes, what it costs at the time of writing, and which kind of solo business each one suits. If email is your main concern, see our guide to the best email marketing tools for solo business owners, where Systeme.io also appears.

Quick verdict

  • Choose Shopify if you mainly sell physical products, expect to manage inventory and shipping, want to sell in person or on marketplaces too, or plan to grow into a larger catalog.
  • Choose Systeme.io if you mainly sell courses, coaching, memberships or digital products, want email, funnels and checkout in one dashboard, and want to start on a free plan.
  • The short version: Shopify is the stronger store. Systeme.io is the cheaper way to run an info-product or service business from one tool.

Pricing at the time of writing

Shopify plans

Shopify’s pricing page lists three main plans for small businesses: Basic at $29/month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly), Grow at $79/month billed yearly ($105 monthly) and Advanced at $299/month billed yearly ($399 monthly). Shopify Plus, its enterprise tier, starts at $2,300/month. At the time of writing, Shopify offered a 3-day free trial followed by $1/month for the first three months on most plans, and says there are no setup fees.

The bigger plans mainly add lower card rates, more staff accounts and advanced features. For a solo owner, Basic is the realistic starting point. Shopify describes it as the plan for solo entrepreneurs.

Systeme.io plans

Systeme.io lists four plans that scale mainly by contacts. The Free plan covers 2,000 contacts, 3 sales funnels, 1 course, 1 blog, 1 affiliate program and 1 custom domain, with unlimited email sends. Systeme.io says it never expires and doesn’t need a credit card, though some tools are tightly capped (for example, 1 automation rule and 1 email campaign). Startup is $17/month (5,000 contacts, 10 funnels, 5 courses), Webinar is $47/month (10,000 contacts, 50 funnels, 20 courses and evergreen webinars) and Unlimited is $97/month. Its pricing page also advertises two months free on annual billing.

Fees: the cost that grows with your sales

Subscription price is only half the story. With Shopify, using Shopify Payments means no extra Shopify transaction fee, and online card rates on Basic start at 2.9% + 30 cents per transaction at the time of writing. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify adds its own transaction fee (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced). Shopify notes that Shopify Payments is only available in certain countries.

Systeme.io charges 0% transaction fees on every plan and connects to Stripe, PayPal and other gateways. Your payment processor still charges its own processing fees, so check its pricing too. Paid Shopify apps can also add to your monthly bill. Capterra’s summary of Shopify user reviews highlights app costs and transaction fees adding up as a common complaint.

How they differ

Selling physical products

This is where Shopify clearly leads. It includes inventory management across up to 10 locations on its standard plans, shipping label purchase with discounts that Shopify lists at up to 87%, sales on social channels and marketplaces, and point-of-sale tools for selling at pop-ups or markets. It also lists abandoned checkout recovery and built-in fraud analysis (which requires Shopify Payments).

Systeme.io can sell physical products too. Its help center explains how to add products with SKUs, weights, stock and taxes, and how to set shipping fees by weight, order price or quantity. But it is explicit that Systeme.io does not manage shipping or fulfillment, so you handle packing and delivery yourself. That works for a small range of products sold through a funnel, but it isn’t a full storefront with a catalog, collections and product search.

Selling digital products, courses and coaching

Systeme.io is designed for this. Courses, memberships, communities, a booking calendar and an affiliate program manager are part of the platform, and you can sell a course on the free plan. Checkout pages, upsells and order bumps sit inside the same funnel builder, so a buyer can be tagged, enrolled and emailed automatically without connecting separate tools.

Shopify can sell digital downloads through its free Shopify Digital Products app, which delivers files and links after purchase. Course hosting, memberships and bookings aren’t listed as built-in features on Shopify’s pricing page, so you would normally add third-party apps for them, which can add monthly costs.

Email marketing and funnels

Both include email marketing. Shopify’s plans include email campaigns, customer segments, marketing automations and unlimited contacts. Systeme.io includes unlimited email sends on every plan, plus tagging, automation rules and workflows, and its funnel builder covers opt-in pages, sales pages, order forms, upsells and thank-you pages. If your business runs on lead magnets and launch sequences, Systeme.io’s tools are more tightly connected. If your business runs on product drops and repeat orders, Shopify’s store-focused email tools fit better.

Design, apps and room to grow

PCMag rates Shopify 4.5 out of 5 and gives it an Editors’ Choice award, praising its unlimited products, storage and bandwidth, 24/7 support, large third-party app store and attractive themes. Its main criticisms are that the options can feel overwhelming for casual sellers and that there’s no free version. Higher plans add more staff accounts and lower card rates, and Shopify Plus adds enterprise features if you ever need them.

Systeme.io is more of a generalist. Software Advice lists an average user rating of 4.8 out of 5 at the time of writing, with users praising the all-in-one platform and free plan, while common complaints include difficult navigation and confusing instructions. Its page builder is functional, but if a polished branded storefront matters most to you, Shopify’s theme ecosystem is deeper.

Support and ease of use

Shopify lists 24/7 live chat support on the Basic plan. Systeme.io offers 24/7 email support and says its average response time is under two hours, seven days a week. Neither lists phone support on these plans.

Shopify: who should choose it

  • Makers and resellers selling physical products with stock, variants and shipping
  • Owners who also sell in person, on social channels or on marketplaces
  • Anyone planning to grow a product catalog or add staff later
  • Sellers who want a dedicated, polished storefront and a large app ecosystem
  • Pros: best-in-class store tools, inventory and shipping built in, 24/7 live chat, huge app and theme ecosystem
  • Cons: no free plan, apps and third-party payment fees add up, can feel like a lot for a very small seller

Systeme.io: who should choose it

  • Coaches, consultants, educators and creators selling courses, coaching or memberships
  • Owners selling digital products who want email, funnels and checkout in one place
  • Anyone who wants to launch on a free plan and only pay as their list grows
  • Sellers with a handful of physical products who are happy to ship orders themselves
  • Pros: generous free plan, 0% platform transaction fees, unlimited email sends, courses and funnels built in
  • Cons: not a full ecommerce storefront, no fulfillment tools, email-only support, tight automation limits on the free plan

Can you use both?

Yes, and some businesses do: a Shopify store for physical products alongside Systeme.io for a course or coaching funnel. For most solo owners starting out, though, paying for two platforms adds cost and complexity. Pick the one that matches what you sell most, and revisit the choice when your business changes. If you’d rather build a full website on WordPress instead, our Hostinger review covers a budget hosting option.

How we chose

This is a research-based comparison. We did not open stores or build funnels on either platform for this article. We compared current plans, prices, fees and limits directly from Shopify’s and Systeme.io’s pricing pages, read their help documentation on physical and digital products, and weighed independent evaluations from PCMag along with aggregated user reviews on Capterra and Software Advice. We focused on what matters to a solo owner: total monthly cost, fees on each sale, what you can sell, and how much you’ll need to add on.

FAQ

Is Systeme.io better than Shopify?

Not overall. Each is better at different things. Systeme.io is usually the better value for courses, coaching and digital products sold through funnels. Shopify is the stronger choice for physical products and a full online store.

Is Systeme.io really free?

Systeme.io’s Free plan has no time limit and doesn’t require a credit card, according to its pricing page. It covers up to 2,000 contacts, 3 funnels and 1 course, with limits on tools such as automation rules.

Does Shopify have a free plan?

No. At the time of writing, Shopify offers a short free trial and then a discounted first few months on most plans. After that, Basic is $29/month billed yearly or $39 billed monthly.

Can I sell physical products on Systeme.io?

Yes. You can add physical products with stock and shipping rules, but Systeme.io says it doesn’t handle shipping or fulfillment, so you send orders yourself.

Does either platform take a cut of my sales?

Systeme.io lists 0% transaction fees on every plan. Shopify charges no extra transaction fee if you use Shopify Payments, but adds a fee (2% on Basic) when you use a third-party payment provider. In both cases, card processing fees still apply.

The bottom line

If you’re selling physical products and want room to grow, Shopify is the stronger, more complete store, and Basic is the sensible place to start. If you’re selling knowledge, services or digital products and want email, funnels and checkout in one place at a low cost, Systeme.io is hard to beat, and its free plan lets you start without spending anything. Check both companies’ current pricing before you commit, since plans and offers change often.
